[cy]Ddaru mi buddsoddi’n ddiweddar mewn rhywbeth dwi di fod eisiau ers peth amser:[/cy]

[cy]Ers amser maith, dwi wedi bod hefo diddordeb mewn ffotograffiaeth (di llwyddo mewn Eisteddfod ranbarthol yr Urdd, ac ond di methu mynd i’r brifwyl oherwydd bod fy athrawes Cymraeg wedi methu gyrru’r lluniau i’r beirniad mewn amser). Tan nawr, dyw e ddim yn rhywbeth dwi di allu gwneud yn iawn (rhan i wneud gyda’n dewis gwael mewn camerâu, a rhywfaint i wneud hefo’n diffyg dysgu sut i gael y camera i weithio’n iawn).

Wedi dweud ‘ny, dwi’n hapus dros ben gyda rhai o’r lluniau dwi di allu cymryd gyda’n camera ‘rybish’ – fe ges i luniau reit neis yn Dŷ Ddewi flwyddyn ddiwethaf, gan gynnwys yr un ‘ma o’r nenfwd. Ac un o’n casgliadau gorau, sef Cymru O’r Awyr ar ôl i Fi a’n ffrind Gareth hedfan lawr i Abertawe am gyri (do, ddaru ni hedfan o Lerpwl i Abertawe am gyri…).

Gan fy mod i wedi gwario shwt gymaint ar y camera newydd ma, dwi’n gorfodi’n hun i ddysgu sut i’w ddefnyddio’n iawn (ac yn aros i ffwrdd o’r gosodiadau awtomatig), a pheidio poeni cymaint am edrych yn wyrion yn sefyll yn ganol stryd brysur gyda’r camera. Mae rhywfaint o’n hymchwil wedi dod lan gyda blogiau diddorol ar ffotograffiaeth (Mostly Lisa ac Photoshop Insider), sydd wedi dangos cryn dipyn o driciau diddorol i mi yn barod. Dwi di fod allan o gwmpas Caer yn barod (gyda chanlyniadau cymysg…). Felly, edrychwch ‘mlaen i gael llawer fwy o luniau dros y misoedd nesaf.[/cy]

[en]I’ve had an interest in photography for quite some time (I actually qualified for the Urdd Eisteddfod’s Photography category way back when, missing out on the competition because the Schoolteacher forgot to send the entries off to the Judges in time). Until now though, it’s not something I’ve been able to do properly (due in part to having really naff cameras and a failure on my part to learn how to use them properly).

Having said that, I’m really pleased with some of the images I’ve been able to pull off with my ‘naff’ cameras – I managed some reasonable snaps of St David’s last year, including this one of one of the ceiling. My favourite set is still the ‘Wales from the Air’ series , which I took during Mine and Gareth’s trip to Swansea for a curry (yeah, we flew down to Swansea for a curry… what of it?).

I’m now forcing myself to learn how to use the new camera’s features (and staying away from the full-auto settings), and trying not to feel so self concious when standing in the middle of a busy street pointing a camera at things. My research into techniques has lead me to some really nice photo/photography blogs (including Mostly Lisa and Photoshop Insider), which have helped a bit in getting to grips with the subject. I’ve been out and about a bit in Chester (with mixed results…). So, look forward to some more over/underexposed shots over the next few months…[/en]

Welcome to the DSLR club🙂 My top tips would be learn about framing (rule of 3rds is good) and make the most of the shallow depth of field afforded by the large image sensor (i.e. learn about how aperture setting effects how much of the focus plane is in focus/blurred). Assuming you just have a kit lens it’s well worth investing in a 50mm prime lens (non-zoom), they are cheap and offer you many more possibilities for creative photography thanks to the fast maximum aperture setting of F1.8 (v.s F4-5.6 for a typical kit lens). Plus prime lens are really sharp!

      Thanks Rory,

I ordered myself the 50mm F/1.8 and it came yesterday (I’m hoping to have a bit more of a play with it over the weekend. I’ve been doing some background reading around aperture settings and shutter speeds and it’s starting to make sense in my head. I managed to nab some nice shots yesterday with the 50mm cranked all the way up to f/1.8, with the shallow DOF.

I’m going to be in Aberystwyth around the end of the month, so it’d be good to meet to compare notes/get tips🙂
